Mark S. Klein, Esq.

Mr. Klein concentrates in New York State and New York City tax matters. He has over 20 years of experience with federal, multistate, state, and local taxation. He may be best known for his public speaking on tax topics. Mr. Klein has lectured extensively throughout the United States and Canada and teaches courses on state taxation and tax practice and procedure at the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Management Tax Certificate Program. His articles have appeared in The CPA Journal, the Journal of Multistate Taxation and Incentives, and in other publications devoted to multistate tax issues.

Hugh Smart joined Columbus Life Insurance Company as Director of the Advanced Markets Group in July 2009.  He directs the group's work with producers for all companies in the Western & Southern Financial Group.  Hugh has over 24 years experience in working with private clients and their advisers in both a life insurance and law firm setting.  After obtaining his B.A. from the University of Cambridge, Hugh moved to Chicago and earned his law degree from IIT/Chicago-Kent College of Law.  He spent the next 11 years in private law practice, ending as a Partner in Estate Planning department of a Chicago law firm. Hugh joined Allstate Life Insurance Company as part of their Advanced Markets group, working primarily with independent agents through Allstate's Lincoln Benefit Life subsidiary, assisting them in all aspects of Advanced Markets.  Hugh left Allstate in November 2006 and joined AXA Equitable Life Insurance where he worked with independent and bank producers supporting the sales of variable annuities.

Dr. Katy Votava created the consulting firm of GOODCARE.com.  She works with financial advisors and their clients from all over the United States to help them plan for and manage their healthcare costs.  Dr. Katy's in-depth experience as a nurse practitioner, healthcare administrator, educator and researcher gives her a broad view of healthcare in retirement and what the real impact is on consumers.  She is an expert on personal healthcare costs, Medicare, and long-term care.  She has been featured on the Nightly Business Report, Health.com, and speaks frequently on personal healthcare finance.  Dr. Katy Votava is a registered nurse with a PhD in health economics and nursing from the University of Rochester where she also completed a pre-doctoral fellowship in community and preventive medicine.  Dr. Katy also did a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School.

As LTC Specialist, Andrea's primary activity consists of helping financial services professionals determine and satisfy the needs of their clients as it relates to LTC insurance coverage.  Andrea received her BA from SUNY Albany. She is active in the Rochester chapter of the Association of Insurance & Financial Advisors, and the Financial Planning Association. As a Certified Continuing Education instructor with the NYS Insurance Department, Andrea has presented CE courses at the NYS LTC Form, the FPA and RAIFA, in addition to Upstate’s schedule of programs throughout the state. She is a certified LUTCF instructor and has been certified by the NYS Partnership for LTCI to discuss and market “Partnership” policies to consumers.  Prior to joining Upstate, Andrea worked forFinger Lakes Long Term Care Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Rochester Blue Cross & Blue Shield, as a sales representative.

Eric Jacobson is director of fixed-income research for Morningstar. In addition to writing in-depth analyses of individual funds, he originated the "Bond Squad" column for Morningstar.com® in 1999 and writes installments for that series, along with "Fund Spy" and other columns and articles appearing in a variety of Morningstar publications.  From 2006 through mid-2008 he was director of fixed-income strategies for Morningstar Indexes, and he was responsible for the design and launch of Morningstar's suite of U.S., global, and emerging-markets bond indexes. Before joining the company in 1995 as a closed-end fund analyst, he worked for Kemper Financial Services. Jacobson covers a wide breadth of mutual fund and bond-market topics and sectors, including those of inflation-indexed, mortgage, corporate, and municipal bonds as well as mutual fund regulation and distribution.
