Program:
Explaining the End of the World as We Know It
The World According to TARP: How Safe Are Your Bank Accounts?
In the late summer and early fall of 2008, spurred by the sub-prime mortgage fiasco, the credit markets froze, taking down long-established financial institutions along with the global economy and forever changing the banking industry as we knew it. We begin with an overview of decades long events and public policies that led to the skyrocketing growth of the sub-prime mortgage market and describe the nature of the derivative securities which led directly to the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the reorganization of both Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch. We then connect the dots to show how the fall of these giants then placed large banks like Citibank and Bank of America in peril - a state they remain in today. Finally, we'll explain the political atmosphere that ultimate led to the passage of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP), what TARP intended to do and what actually happened.
On the heels of this overview, we'll have a debate followed by a period of questions and answers. Some of the questions we expect to consider include:
1) Did TARP solve the immediate problem of the credit crunch?
2) Did TARP punish good banks?
3) Did TARP prevent the worse or only delay it?
4) Are my bank accounts safe?
5) When will things get better?
6) Will things get worse?
7) What will the banking industry look like in five years?
8) What is the single most important thing Washington can do right now?
9) What is the single most important thing Washington should avoid doing right now?
